font-family: Arial; color: black;">As we all know, July 14th is well known as Bastille Day, marking the day that the people of Paris, armed only with stale baguettes and berets, stormed the Bastille in search of ammunition, political prisoners and a rumored stash of French fries and stinky cheese. The attack on the prison symbolized a nation's desire to end an absolute monarchy, form a constitution supporting the tenets of Enlightenment and develop into a republic soon to be controlled by Napoleon.

What does this have to do with softball? Very little. Since we got slaughtered by the 5th inning, I needed something to fill up the page. Phil's Crappy Corner kicked our butt. I really think they shouldn't be in our league. The average age is probably 21, and they're too good to play slow-pitch co-ed softball. There's a reason they've scored 163 runs in 10 games. One of their females even has her own bat bag. Seriously?

Anyway, it's not for me to decide who's in the league, so it is what it is.

The Craps came out swinging. Pull hitting bouncing on the right field line and with their first 4 at bats, they were already ahead 4-0. Even after switching Jon and Amy to cover the line, they just adjusted their aim to Amy in right center.

A little shaken, but still optimistic, we came to the plate. Their pitcher, the only one really old enough to play in this league obviously plays in a fast-pitch league because he was throwing them in fast and straight. Blue didn't seem to care. That and some good fielding brought us down 1-2-3.

The Craps quickly started scoring more runs in the 2nd inning. Blue wasn't helping when he said Rob never tagged the runner at first. Blue might have tried to make up for it by calling a Crappy runner out for leading off 2nd before the pitch. Even so, they scored 6 more runs to make it 10-0.

Henry started the bottom of the second with a base hit, but it did no good. The Craps were soon back, scoring 3 more runs to bring us on the brink of a slaughter. Alyce also got one of the only base hits, but Crappy turned a double play to shut down hopes of a rally.

Finally, in the 4th inning, there were signs of life in the B61 squad. Finally, an inning where the Craps didn't score! With 2 outs, Jamie got us pumped with a rocket out to center field. The center field had no chance, and Jamie had an easy jog to home. We all agreed it was a good time to go home, but we decided to see what else could happen. Good thing we stayed because Care Bomb knocked a line drive down the 3rd base line. Left field had no chance to get to it, and we had back-to-back home runs! 13-2. Willy tried to follow up but struck out. The pitcher called him back because the last pitch was too fast (it wasn't Blue who called him back.) No help though.

In the 5th, Pawnee went in for Amtrak and got some sweet action with a quick catch to right field. A solo HR to left field brought Crappy to 14-2. They then questioned a called out at 1st, but Blue stood strong by his call. Seriously, you're up 14-2 and you question a play at 1st?? Roblem was so mad that he said he'd kill someone if he wasn't taken out of the game. It didn't matter though; 3 quick outs later, Crappy had won by slaughter.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; We need to earn it.

<span style="font-size: 10pt; His experience, enthusiasm, quick glove and big bat have led and guided this team through its ups and downs. Few things pick us up more than one of his clutch hits or his game-saving plays to 1st. Women swoon over him, and he even convinced one of the Lady Bus Stops to marry him and bear his child. So, he's doing ok. I think we're lucky to have him on our team and in our lives.

This blog has moved
The season is beginning to wind down and we are closing in on the playoffs. I just wanted to address any updates you may need and get all the available information to you.

1) This week 6/30 7/2 will be used to play make-up games from previous rain outs. This is the schedule for the week: (Home team listed first)

6/30 Field #6 Fats vs Zombie Hut
6/30 Field #8 Element vs Wades
7/1 Field #8 Dirt Dawgs vs Massey Knakal
7/1 Field #5 B61 vs BNS
7/2 Field #8 Time Served vs Brazen Head (BDS)

2) I am still missing scores from the following games:
Royale vs B61 on 6/25
BK Bread vs Eriksen on 6/27

3) Very briefly I would like to lay out the playoff format and any tie breakers that may be necessary. The top four teams in the east and west will make the playoffs. 8 teams total. The first tie breaker is head to head record. ex.. Team A and Team B both have 7-4 records the team that won their head to head game in the regular season will take the playoff spot. Or if both teams are in the playoffs, the team with the head to head win will have the higher seed. In the event there are three or more teams with the same record and have all split the regular season games, regular season division record is the second tie breaker. i.e.. Team A, Team B and Team C all have identical 6-5 records and in the regular season Team A beat Team B, Team B beat Team C while Team C beat Team A the best division records will decide playoff positioning. In the event all three of these teams have the same division record, run differential will be the deciding factor.
Run differential is determined by subtracting the number of runs your team has allowed from the number of runs your team has scored. The number you are left with is your run differential. If there is any confusion and you would like further explanation, please call me.

4) THE ALL STAR GAME IS APPROACHING: The all-star festivities will be held on Friday July 18th on Redhook Baseball Field #9 (the lighted field across from softball fields on Bay St.). We will once again have food and refreshments, pre-game competitions and one nine inning game between the East and West all-stars. Each team is asked to send three participants for the activities. Of the three there must be at least one woman. Pre-game activities will include long ball competition, out field accuracy and fastest feet. Please get your all-stars to me as soon as possible. And please nominate people that are going to show up. The pre game festivities will start at 5:45.

5) Finally in the event of bad weather this week or next, we will be doing anything in our power to get the games in. Be prepared to work on the fields to get the games in. If there are any rain outs of games that don't effect the playoffs they will not be made up.

Last week's writeup

Getting a little more organized....
Here is last week's writeup:
http://www.redhooksoftball.com/b61/writeups.php

Playoff analysis from Alyce

we've got royale next week. they are 2 and 6
and then our last two weeks are tough- BNS and then Mucho Gusto

Gallery's remaining games are Royale, Mucho Gusto and then Brooklyn Public Defenders. The only tough game for them is Mucho Gusto.

Our record is 5 and 3
Gallery is 4 and 4
if we lose two and they win two, and only the top 4 teams make the
playoffs, then we are out, because we are tied with Gallery, and they
beat us in the reg season.

In our division, Brooklyn Bread is first, obv
Magnetic Field is 2nd at 6 and 3. they still have to play The Anchors and Brooklyn Bread.

Mucho Gusto is currently 5 and 1 they playedFats, whoever the hell they are, last night, but i don't think it's posted yet, and then they play Gallery and us.

anyhow
that's my little recap of the playoff schedule.
basically we need to make sure we win at least 2 of our last 3 games,
that way when/if Magnetic Field loses to brooklyn bread, we are tied with them record-wise and we beat them last night.
or hope that that
Either the royale or public defenders can take it to Gallery

if we can only win 1 of our games, we may be out of the playoff running--- assuming only the top 4 teams get in.

June 12th Game vs. Anchors

It's Not Raining
When It's Sunny
June 12th vs. Anchors

It's funny. We had a very
different game last week. Anchors is a
good team – strong players, friendly but with an edge. That's ok because we showed up to play.

It
shouldn't matter who we play. One of my
favorite compliments is when an opposing team says, "Teams hate playing you
because it looks like you're having so much fun and don't care." Even in this game, the catcher told me that
she wanted to play for our team. We'll
still have hours of debates of what we should do better, but I like it when we
play with ourselves and not worry about the other team. Well, I know I like playing with myself, and
I like playing with you guys too.

I know it's
always easier to be happier with each other when we're winning and doing well,
but the best would be to be happy no matter what.

The B61 Lineup
pitcher: "Everybody
needs a knee" Jamie
catcher: "Lettuce
entertain you" Sarah and "I Rock" Alyce
1st: "I always look
like this" Rob
2nd: "Don't stop
believing" Tamara
ss: "Boots" Matt
3rd: "Put me in
coach. I can do it" Brendan
left: "I am the
cleanup, coo coo kachoo" Steve
center: "I am" Capone
floater: "Float
like a butterfly" Amy
right: "Choo Choo!"
Amtrak Jonathan
pinch hitter: Brendon
Coach: Elvis
Spiritual Advisor:
McWhippit
Our loyal fans: "I'm
too sexy for this bench" Tracey, "Let's not make Neptune angry" Stef, "Looking
for a nickname" Aubrey, "I'm wearing my kick-ass B61 socks" Jim, "I can stop
play with one walk of my stroller" Rachel/Cooper/Cali, Gary

The Game
Something was different. We were pumped and ready to play. Was it the writeup, the beer, the day? We were just fired up, B61 old school. "No pep talks. Let's play ball." "Let's be in it from the Geico. 15% more runs." We had chatter, high fives, some ass grabs,
laughter and a quickly emptying cooler.

We start out slow though. Jonathan leads us off with a crappy fly ball to 2nd base. Ain't no way that's happening
again. Matt picks us up with a base hit
past the pitcher. Jamie follows and hits
a pop fly to left field which gets called back as an "illegal pitch"?? Apparently, there was no arc on the
pitch. "7 years in this league, I've
never heard of that before." "Well,
you've never met Blue before." Definitely odd, but we're willing to take the free chance. Unfortunately, Jamie hits another pop fly, so
now he's 0 for 2, and it's only the first inning. Steve reliably hits a base hit to advance
Matt, but it's not enough. A quick out
at first, and we're done. Not the strong
start we wanted, but we haven't turned on ourselves yet.

Our defense kicks strong. Tam starts by stopping a grounder and making the play to 1st look easy. Capone runs for a dramatic
sliding catch but can't hold it. I like
his moxie. Brendan, testing his mettle
at 3rd, makes his first out with a pick up and throw to Rob. Matt catches a quick popup, and we're
good. That's the way it should be.

Capone leads the 2nd with a blooper out to center
field. "Stay on the bag!" Steve gives Ant a little extra coaching from
3rd base. "Hey, Anthony. Listen to me. I'm on 3rd. I have a
red shirt on." It was really Capone's
wheels that helped as Tam hits a grounder to shortstop who can't convert the
out at 2nd. Rob advances the
runner with a grounder to 1st – "I can't believe the big guy got
down for that." Sarah advances the
runners as well, and Capone puts the first mark on the board.

Some quick outs, and we're at bat again.

Czar leads B61 off with a ball out to right field. The fielder misjudges it, and it goes over
his head. Jonathan uses the opportunity to
round the bases. HR! Choo choo! Then again, Matt said, 'That's an error, right? You're not counting that as a HR." It's a home run in my book.

Matt then gets a typical weak ass hit and luckily makes it to first
(That's the way I remember it!) Jamie
lines one past 3rd base. Jamie
disses Amy and decides not to bring her in as his pinch runner. Rhino hits a sac fly to advance Matt to 3rd,
and Brendan does the same to bring Matt home. 3-0. In a questionable call,
Capone is called out at 1st though I'm sure he beat the play.

Our defense holds them again in the 3rd inning,
including a good play by the rookie on 3rd and a textbook Matt ->
Tamara toss for the 3rd out.

Tam starts the 4th by booking for a base hit to 1st. "Were you on track in high school?!" McLovin spices it up with a perfect opposite
field hit to bring Tam to 2nd. The shortstop uses Sarah's grounder to make the play at 2nd,
but leaves runners at 1st and 3rd for an Adam pinch
hit. His sac fly doesn't have the
distance, so it's time for a 2 out rally. Jonathan hits a nice base knock between 1st and 2nd sending Tam home and Sarah to 3rd. 4-0. Matt hits a line drive to
left to bring Sarah in and Czar to 2nd. Jamie and Steve keep the rally alive with base hits to bring Czar
and Boots home. 7-0. What a rally.

Anchors comes alive with a base hit to center and a bobbled blooper
to right field. Brendan converts a
grounder to 3rd by tagging the runner. Yet, Anchors keeps coming strong. A few more base hits and Anchors scores two
runs until Steve makes the final out with a pretty basket catch running full
speed towards the infield.

In the top of the 5th, Colin takes the mound as
pitcher. It's good to see him there with
his distinctive wind up pitch. Capone
gets a single, and Tam walks. A missed
catch by Colin (not high enough for an infield fly rule??) still gives him
enough time to get Capone out at 3rd. The Colin switch does them good as Anchors
quickly gets the next 2 outs to shut us down.

Jonathan starts the 6th with another base hit. Matt hits a line
drive directly at Colin, leaving Jon stranded between 1st and 2nd. Fortunately, the throw to 1st is
missed, and Amtrak runs to 3rd! "Look at the dust!" Jamie aims and
hits a grounder right into Jon's foot on the 3rd base bag. He sets up again and this time hits an RBI
single to make it 8-2. Matt pinch runs
for Jamie and advances to 2nd on Steve's base knock. A good catch by the 2nd basewoman
gives us 2 outs, and in a surprising event, Anthony strikes out to end the
side. "That last pitch was
horrible. If I had swung at it, you guys
would have yelled at me."

Anchors comes alive as it hits a base hit and then a long home run
out to deep left. They cry, "Korean Power!"
as their bomber goes back to the dugout. It must have rubbed off, because Anchors quickly hits another base hit
between 2nd and 3rd. Jim catches a foul ball off the fence, but unfortunately, he's not
playing, so it doesn't count. A deep
ball to left bounces to Steve, and Anchors puts runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Capone makes a great catch
running in, sees the 3rd base runner tagging up and rockets a
perfect throw to home. Alyce throws off
the mask, makes a perfect catch and covers the plate as she waits for the
runner to finally reach her for the tag. Denied! I love watching that play
in my mind over and over!

Leading 8-4 in the 7th, Tam gets called out with a
questionable call at 1st, but Rob makes up for it with a base hit
past 2nd. Lettuce hits a
SWEET line drive past the left fielder to drive Rob home and get a double for
the day. Alyce follows with another
SWEET drive over the left fielder's head! With Sarah on 3rd and Alyce on 1st, Jonathan hits
another long ball to right field that the fielder underestimates. Don't they see the guns on that guy? It's a triple, and B61 goes ahead 11-4. This time, Matt takes a pot shot at Jon on 3rd but misses. He follows with a RBI
single to deep left. Jamie smacks a long
ball. As he limps around the bases, 3rd base coach Capone tells him, "Well, you have to make a decision," as he
approaches 3rd. A triple is
good enough for now. Especially as
Brendan hits a single past the shortstop to bring in the run. 14-4.
Our defense remains cool – an easy Reinert catch, a Tam -> Rob conversion
and a Matt-> Tam gives us an easy 3 outs to end a good game.

Memorable Moments
· Jamie: "Can I get a pinch runner? Who made last out?"
Adam:
"Amy."
Jamie: "
Never mind."
· Blue stopping the game every time Rachel walked
outside the dugout with Cooper and the stroller
· That great Capone-Alyce double play at the plate
· Colin's comment after the game, "I still love
you guys. I don't like Blue, but I love
you guys." We love Anchors too.
· Adam told me I hit a cycle (single, double,
triple and HR), but I don't remember a double
· Every time I scored, the catcher would say,
"Welcome back," "Good to see you," or "Right this way." I love a good attitude and sense of humor.
· Anchors' catcher, "I want to play for you
guys. You bring beer, and we're too
serious."
· Jamie going 0 for 2 in one at bat
· "Well, Jamie, you have to a make a decision."

Player of the Game
One MVP goes to the rookie Brendan. He stepped up to playing 3rd and made some key defensive outs
and had 2 RBIs for the day. I have to
give Alyce the co-MVP nod. For only
playing a few innings, she got the team on fire. Batting 1000 with a powerful knock to left
field and that beautiful play at home – that's the Lady Bus Stops personified.

Different but the same

They used to be Schnack, but now, they're Element. Element took the field with 8 players, leaving a gap in the
infield and out. Base hits by Jon, Jamie and Steve in the surprise
cleanup position set us ahead 1-0. Not a powerhouse start, but we struck
first.
B61 took the field, and it looked like a game of musical chairs. I
haven't seen that many new positions since I bought the Kama Sutra. Jamie
at 1st, Laura at 2nd, Will at SS, Henry at 3rd, Matt pitching, Tam as catcher,
Elvis as coach. Whew. Nonetheless, we were ready to go. Or
were we?
A bobbled ball at 2nd and a walk put Element's first runners on 1st and 2nd,
and they took it from there. A series of shitty hits and some bad
fielding sent Element through their condensed lineup with 6 runs.
Capone's plea, "Can we just get a third out?" voiced what we were all
thinking. Matt finally caught a line drive to end the pain.
We would never bounce back. Despite some good defensive innings, we could
never convert our hits, and Element marched ahead 12-3. In the bottom of
the 7th, we had a brief rally, but it was too little and too late.
Final score: 12-6.

Player of the Game
Player of the game is hard. Steve had two great
running catches in the left, but I think it has to go to Matt. He's
unflappable. Pitched cool and calm under pressure, 2 for 4 on the day,
made some key defensive plays and never got his boots dirty. And like
Joe DiMagio's 56 game hitting streak and Cal Ripken Jr's
2632 consecutive games streak, these records may never be
broken. Here's a look at the line-up that had two
different players hit for the cycle on this record setting
day.

Not to be lost in the onslaught of offense was BNS'
spectacular pitching and defense that allowed just two
base runners via a bloop double in the first inning and a
leadoff walk in the third. To be commended was the
attitude and spirit of the Dirt Dawgs. They never gave up
and never were sore. They played with enthusiasm and high
spirits through out. Something many other teams probably
would not have done given the situation. JP

NOTE: BNS used their first female exemption during the
game and played with 2 women.

---"Johanna Bjorken" <Johanna@jackrbt.com> wrote ---
> Here's Jake's writeup of last night's game. What is a
playoff "birth"?
> Is that like being born again?
>
>
>
> B61, Clinches Playoff Birth, One Win Away From Home
Field Advantage
> In a game they had to have, B61 pulls out a victory in
dramatic fashion.
> B61 currently sits in second place in the East division,
but a hard
> charging BNS team is pressing them for the spot. So when
they took the
> field on Tuesday, they had a lot to play for. The
however didn't start
> in a positive fashion. Through the first three innings
Angry Wade's held
> a 4 - 0 lead. But AW played a very loose and sloppy
defensive game and
> allowed B61 to tie the game in the top of the third. And
that set the
> stage in the fifth inning for B61's O'Henry to hit a
Chris G. pitch to
> deep right center field for a three run home run and
take a 7 - 4 lead
> late in the contest. It seemed as if a giant weight was
lifted off B61's
> collective shoulders. They would play sparkling defense
the rest of the
> way. With the victory B61 clinches a playoff birth and
with just one
> more win B61 can clinch home field in round one of the
playoffs. We often lose track of this aspiration. When we make mistakes, we think that we are failing or not measuring up. But if life is about experimenting, experiencing, and learning, then to be imperfect is a prerequisite. Life becomes much more interesting once we let go of our quest for perfection and aspire for imperfection instead.
This doesn't mean that we don't strive to be our best. We simply accept that there is no such thing as perfection-especially in life. All living things are in a ceaseless state of movement. Even as you read this, your hair is growing, your cells are dying and being reborn, and your blood is moving through your veins. Your life changes more than it stays the same. Perfection may happen in a moment, but it will not last because it is an impermanent state. Trying to hold on to perfection or forcing it to happen causes frustration and unhappiness.
In spite of this, many of us are in the habit of trying to be perfect. One way to nudge ourselves out of this tendency is to look at our lives and notice that no one is judging us to see whether or not we are perfect. Sometimes, perfectionism is a holdover from our childhood-an ideal we inherited from a demanding parent. We are adults now, and we can choose to let go of the need to perform for someone else's approval. Similarly, we can choose to experience the universe as a loving place where we are free to be imperfect. Once we realize this, we can begin to take ourselves less seriously and have more fun. Imperfection is inherent to being human. By embracing your imperfections, you embrace yourself.

---------
Forget that. I'd rather pitch a perfect game. Even a good game, for that matter!

Writeups are finally online

Well, the B61 game writeups are finally online. It would appear that the dominating force in the Dodge (Brooklyn Central) YMCA Softball league has passed the torch. The team known as Brooklyn Net Sellers (formerly Annie's/Smith's Tavern) was shelled by a vastly improved Schnack team. Schnack used their speed and good hitting, combined with solid defense and pitching to rip BNS in a one sided game 11-4 and quite possibly have taken over the moniker of leagues best.
The game wasn't as one sided as the score might indicate. Although it wasn't that close either. For BNS the game started in a similar fashion to their other games this season. Shoddy defense, inconsistent pitching and some power by Schnack led to five first inning runs. BNS struck back with three in the bottom of the frame, punctuated by a 2 run home run by newly wed Tony C. After Schnack added one in the top of the third BNS would draw closer with one in the bottom of the inning, which schnack would answer in the fourth. The score was 7 - 4 going in to the top of the fifth, where Schnack would break the game open. With one out in the inning they strung together a double and back-back-back Homers to the right and right-center fielders. And that's how the scoring ended.
Is Schnack a team of destiny? Will BNS recover? We'll just have to wait and see. Line-up Requirements: All teams must field at least three women. However, a team will be permitted to play with two women in the field once during the season with out being penalized. The second time a team plays with 2 women they must play with nine fielders and can not replace that spot in the field or use the Extra Hitter (EH) position. As well as their opponent will have the option of using 2 women in the field. Upon the third offense the offending team will forfeit the game. A team may pinch hit for a woman with a man at any time during the contest, providing they have another roster eligible woman to play the field in the next defensive inning. Any team that forfeits a game must pay the umpire the full $50.00 umpire fee. (including pick-up games)

(check the website to see how many times a team has used two women players on the field)

3m. If you win your protest the game will be replayed from the point of the protest and your $20.00 refunded. If you lose the protest the result of the game will stand and your deposit forfeited. type='text'>Muscadine Resveratrol

This doesn't have to do with softball, but my friend wrote an article about muscadine resveratrol which I thought was very interesting. Apparently, it is going to be a new hot topic for medicine. Resveratrol is an extract from wine grape skins which has been proven to reduce the risk of cancer, improve health and increase lifespans. The muscadine grape has some of the highest concentrations of resveratrol.

Check out the article here: http://www.czarsolutions.com/topics/html/index.php?module=Pagesetter&func=viewpub&tid=1&pid=1

Jonathan

Our first practice

Well, we had our first practice, and I am sore. So out of shape. It was so much fun. As Alyce said, the best day of the year so far because softball has started. There were 16 of us, and that wasn't even all of us!
